Will you watch a movie on your set-top box enabled TV on the same day as a theater release? What if the ticket was Rupees 1000?
This is the new release strategy adopted by Kamal Hasan for his magnum opus Viswaroopam. The movie is set to release soon and Kamal has announced that the film would release on DTH set-top boxess 8 hours before it hits screens. The price for one viewing has however been set at a steep 1000 Rupees. The idea behind this seems to be that the viewing will be for more than one person and probably for one entire family.
Speaking about the new strategy, Kamal said “This is targeted at a niche segment that wants to be entertained in the comfort of their homes. It is purely for the excitement of watching it on the first day. The cinema hall experience is still something else”. The move however is getting some mixed response with theater oweners and distributors in Tamil Nadu fearing that if the strategy succeeds they might be further depreciation in the turn out for movies.
Viswaroopam is a much awaited release from Kamal which he has also written and directed and has Bollywood stars like Rahul Bose. There is no information if the film is an action thriller or a horror movie as the promos have till now revealed very little. The big buget extravagance however has a lot of expectations in both Telugu and Tamil.
