In a shocking incident in Amristra, Punjab, a police officer was shot dead in broad daylight by a politician after the officer asked the politician to stop the harassment.

Akali Dal politician Ranjit Singh Rana and his goons allegedly harassed the 23 year old daughter of Assistant Sub-inspector Ravinder Singh regularly and she complained about the same to her police officer father. When the officer, along with his daughter went to the politician’s house to demand the harassment be stopped, the politician fired at the officer and injured his legs. When the injured man was on his way to the hospital, the politician and his men again waylaid him and this time, shot him in the chest. The girl also suffered bullet injuries to her hand.

The issue has sparked widespread outrage in Punjab and the Akali Dal has suspended the accused from the party. The Punjab police have already arrested the accused and recovered guns from him.

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has also ordered that the officer’s daughter be appointed as sub-inspector in the state police on compassionate special grounds.
