Mamata Banerjee’s meeting with Mulayam Singh ended with an interesting suggestion of making Manmohan Singh the President. Unfortunately, this was shot down by the Congress and now Pranab Mukherjee is confirmed as the UPA candidate. Abdul Kalam on the other hand is emerging as a consensus candidate on the other side. This however will be confirmed only by the end of today.

What we need to note is that the President election is no longer about the President himself. This election is now a test for the strength of the UPA and will be clear indication of how many allies stick with their candidate.
